We have a wide range of all sorts of breeds going from the typical Holsteins over Normandy to Hereford, etc. As much as possible we try to select them all ourselves. This makes them all A grades; unless otherwise mentionned. Very rarely they show scars or repairs (best checked on the backside). We always try to search for populair colours but also try to find the really rare patterns or colours in order to be able to offer a truly unique range. So you will find black and white, black, white, brown-white, brown, beige, grey, tri-coloured, brindle, pepper and salt, etc. We basically have them in 3 sizes; the really small ones are tagged as XS or S (between 1-2 m²), then we have an in-between size which is tagged as M (between 2-3 m²). These can be found under the small cowhides. And we also have the big cowhides which are tagged as L or XL (over 3 m²). These you will find under the big cowhides. The small cowhides are a lot harder to find. If you are searching for really small cowhides you may also be interested in our calfskins.Our cowhides are of a superior quality and not comparable to the cowhides who are a lot thinner due to having cut a layer to provide suède leather for the clothing industry. These dry out a lot quicker and hence start curling up a lot quicker. Our cowhides are laying nicely and firm on the floor.Some cowhides may still show folds on the pictures. This is because they are photographed immediatelly after unpacking them. After photographing they are being laid on a big pile which has the natural shape of a cow. They are made of big white cowhides that are being dyed. The leather is of a very good thick quality. Most hides even weigh between 7 to 10 kilogram. There can be slight colour differences because each cowhide has a slightly different colour base to begin with. A colour may seem slightly darker on areas with slightly more beige hairs for example. This is normal and part of a natural product. Due to the isolated and cold environment it became a truly unique breed. They became the key to survival. They produce wool and food. Without the wool Iceland wouldn't have been habitable. Genetically the sheep today is still exactly the same as 1100 years ago. It might be the oldest, and due to its isolated location, possibly also the purest breed in the world. For breeders they are unique. They have been growing for centuries without any other mix with other breeds. The wool they produce cannot be compared to other breeds. They have a unique combination of inner and outer wool. The outer wool is long, shiny and protects against mist, snow and rain. The inner wool is very fine, soft and isolates them against the cold. They come in many different colours of which white, black and white-black spotted are the most common. The grey and rusty brown ones are a lot more rare. Sizewise the hides are medium to large. These animals have very broad backs, so the width of some of these sheepskins might be bigger compared to other breeds. You can recognise them by their long black-grey-beige coat and horns. They still live today on the German Lüneburger Heath. Lambs are born black and as they age their coat lightens. The darker the coat; the younger the animal. Both the male and the female have large horns. The hairs are very long and fine. Available in natural white (ivory ), white (bleached), dark brown (dyed) and black (dyed). They consist of irregularly stitched together pieces. There is a clear difference in color between the natural and the bleached white skins. The first have an ivory color; while the bleached are very white in comparison. However here and there you still have some hints of ivory so that they still have a bit of a natural look. They come from different kinds of Tibetan goats. They are also called 'Cashmere' goats because they produce the well-known cashmere wool. They live mainly in China and Tibet. They are domesticiated and kept by nomads on the European and Asian Tundra. Nonetheless some rare wild populations still exist. You can also still find them in North-America where they are called Caribous. They are most famously known as the faithful companions of Santa Claus.They live in large herds and their biggest enemy is the wolf. The male, as well as the female, has a big antler. Because they live in cold Arctic areas they have a very thick coat. This coats has two layers; a furry underlayer and an upperlayer of thicker and longer hairs. These hairs are hollow and filled with air. They even serve as life jackets when crossing rivers. The colour varies from rare white to almost black. Twice a year they shed their hairs.Be aware that the hollow hairs from the upperlayer very easily break. Therefore it is not advisable to use reindeer hides in heavy traffic areas. The upper hairs simply break with the slightest friction. A merely decorative use is advised. They're bigger than a roe deer and smaller than a red deer. They are present on all continents except Antarctica. There are many variations in color from white to light brown to almost black, but usually the back is reddish yellow to brown in color and the belly yellowish. However, the dominant color varies by region. In winter the coat takes on a grey colour. The fallow deer sheds hairs twice a year, once in May or June and a second time in September or October. The coat is usually dotted with white spots, they are less noticeable in winter. Some color patterns, such as all-white animals have no spots. For black animals the spots are more brownish black in color, lighter than the rest of the coat. The butt has a pattern of black and white with a black stripe, which runs to the top of the tail. The black line is missing in all white and all black animals. Fallow deer skins are not suitable for heavy traffic areas or intense use. They have hollow upper hairs which easily break. The female deer is considerably smaller. The coat changes twice a year. In summer the coat is thin and reddish brown, in winter it is denser and the hairs are almost twice as long and appear more grey. The winter fur is darker, especially around mane and belly.The antlers of the male red deer grow upright. They live in herds and prefer to stay in large, dense forests and dense swamps. They are very common all over Europe.Be aware that the hollow top hairs break off easily and these skins are not very suitable for walking upon or very frequent use. The tail is rather small (two to four centimeters long). Bulls often have a long "skirt" that can reach the ground. Wild yaks are mostly dark blacky brown while domesticated yaks can have a variety of colours. Yak hides have a very rough and wild appearance. The Burchell zebra is the plains zebra and easily recognisable by the stripes running beneath the belly. The Hartmann zebra on the other hand is known as the mountain zebra. The stripes of these do not run beneath the belly and in general they are a bit smaller. Zebras are not protected species and may thus be marketed in limited editions. However, the demand far exceeds the supply. This leads to high prices and sometimes difficulties obtaining them. Zebras are wild animals and are attacked by other animals in the wild so the zebra skins can have some scars. It is not uncommon and not regarded as a default. That is why they work with A, B, C or D grade. Fully intact zebra skins without scars are virtually unobtainable. We always try to keep the nice A and B grades on stock. Their natural habitat is formed by the dry inlands of South Africa, of which it is also the national symbol. The animal gets its name from the high jumps that it makes. In part to shake off pursuing predators and to warn the rest of the herd. But the animal also tends to jump straight up on four legs, a behavior to show themselves off to the opposite sex. The springbok has a light reddish brown coat with white belly which is trimmed with a dark line. On their backs they have a kind of white `crest` . There are 2 types. The most common blesbok is brown, the insides of the legs are white and they have a white blaze on their foreheads, hence its name. The other kind is an all-white blesbok. Wild blesboks live in the middle of South Africa, in the north to Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Blesboks are the most common antelopes and live in herds. They breed fast and have almost no natural enemies. They are grass eaters and mainly live on open grassland. Both the male and the female have horns, the only visible difference is that the male blesbok has larger ones. The sizes of the skins are small to medium. Impala is a slender, medium-sized antelope with a long neck. The coat is reddish brown or tan in color, lighter on the shoulders, neck and head and the lightest on the lower part of the flanks. The belly is white, as well as the throat, chin, upper lip, eyebrows and insides of the ears. The top of the ears is black, as well as the nose. Also, there runs a vertical black stripe on the rear of the tail and a stripe on the upper side of the tail. Hides are best used in homely environments. You can use animal hides in business environments or high traffic areas but be aware that they will wear much quicker. You can fold an animal hide but it's not ideal. It is best to roll it when your store it away. If you decide to fold it the hide may need some time to relax afterwards. After a few days the folds start to disappear. You can speed up the process by putting something heavy, like books for example, on top. You can also iron your hide on either side. You do this by putting a damp cloth between your ironing machine and the hide. Animal hides do not shift on carpet or wooden and stone floors because the texture on their bottom is a natural anti-slip. If you think it is needed you can always put a velcro on the corners or double sided tape on wooden and stone floors. Sun is very damaging for all sorts of textiles, leathers, etc. It is important to keep dyed and printed hides out of direct sunlight so they do not lose their colour. Natural hides however do not lose their colour and are resistent against sunlight. How do I clean my animal hide? Make cleaning your animal rug part of your normal cleaning routine. Vacuuming regularly is sufficient or if the hide is not too big you can just shake it once outside to air it and get rid of dust. If you own a patchwork rug made of animal hides it is good to turn it once every now and then so that it can wear evenly. You may also use a damp (not wet) cloth which you've soaked in a residue of soft soap and water and rub in the direction of the hairs. Make sure you do not make the hide entirely wet! Don't put it into your washing machine or bring it to a dry cleaner! For sheepskins it's good to brush it with a dog or cat brush to keep the hairs nicely soft and fluffy and remove any dirt. For stains of wine, coffee, tea, juice, food, soup, urine and vomit: try to immediatelly soak most of it into a towel or sponge. If it has turned hard; try to scrape it off with a knife in the direction of the hairs. Afterwards you can use a damp (not wet) cloth which you've soaked in a residue of soft soap and water. You can rub into all directions now. After that you can clean it with a damp cloth that has been soaked into a residue of water (95%) and vinegar (5%). This will make any bad smell go away. For oil-related stains like fat, lipstick and chewing gum: get rid of most of it by scrapping it off with a knife into the direction of the hairs. Then you can put some eucalyptus oil on a cloth and softly rub it over the spot. afterwards rub it with a damp cloth which has been soaked in a residue of soft soap and water. You can rub in all directions. We can't guaranty the spot will have completelly disappeared, but it is the best way to do it and it is worth the try. Cowhides and other animal hides don't like being wet for long. So try to avoid this. On a sunny day you can put your hide outside so that it can air. If you have to put it away for a longer period of time it's good to do it on a dry and well ventilated spot. Preferably rolled onto a tube and protected by a cotton cloth around it. Corners curling up? What to do about it? There are different causes for this. Bad tanning being the most common one. The leather in thinner layers will dry out quicker than the leather in thick layers. This will cause a tension on the surface and cause the curling. Very cheap cowhides start curling quite quickly. However good quality cowhides can also curl up when they're in a bad environment. Strong sunlight or floor heating can make the leather very dry and cause it to curl up. Curling occurs mostly around the legs and neck. Curling simply is something that can occor with cowhides. There's not really a remedy, but you can try to curl up the leather in the opposite direction and 'massage' it. A water spray may be helpfull to keep the skin hydrated. You can also try ironing it on both sides with a damp cloth in between the hide and your ironing machine. If it keeps curling up and it really bothers you, you can just cut off the piece that curls up. To do this you can use a sharp knife and cut on the leather side. That way you only cut away the leather and not the hairs. Try to stay as close to the natural shape of the hide as possible.The easiest way to do this is to go and sit on the hide and slightly lift up the piece you want to cut off. Pull it really tight; this will allow you to easily cut it.
